Changing the siding on your home is a big decision since it protects your home and affects curb appeal. Consider the durability, maintenance, cost, and appearance of different siding materials. There are many types of siding, all with different pros and cons. The following are four popular types of home siding materials.

Vinyl Home Siding Materials

Vinyl siding is often preferred because it has a long warranty after installation, often up to 40 years, and it is affordable. Vinyl siding comes in both insulated and non-insulated options. You can find vinyl in a variety of colors, and it can be easily cleaned with a power washer.

Vinyl tends to warp in extremely hot areas. If your climate gets very hot, it may not be the best option for your house.

Fiber Cement

A composite of wood, clay, sand, and cement, fiber cement is among the top choices for home siding because it is manufactured to look like wood but is more durable. The lifespan of this material is longer than vinyl and it can be painted.

Fiber cement will need to be repainted occasionally and has a higher price tag than vinyl siding.

Natural Wood

Natural wood home siding materials provide a rustic look for your house. There are several types of natural wood siding styles, including shakes, shingles, lap, and boards. When cared for properly, this siding will last for up to 40 years.

Wood siding is harder to maintain than others and requires regular care. It is susceptible to insects, rot, and woodpeckers.

Metal Home Siding Materials

The most common form of metal home siding materials is aluminum, but it can also be made of steel, zinc, or copper. This material is preferred because it is resistant to water, pests, and fire. It is very easy to maintain and colors rarely fade. Metal siding is also insect-resistant.

Metal siding is not a good insulator, so it’s best to purchase an insulated version which is more costly.

Research all the different materials on the market, know the weather in your area, how much maintenance you’re willing to perform, and what your budget looks like for this project. Then you can make a good selection based on the pros and cons of the different types of home siding materials.
